Presentation for how the data travels from Student’s PC to Ulearn System Server

OSI Layer Model and Network Component

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1984 but first introduced in the late 1970s. OSI described the 7 layer model with each layer having specific functionality to perform and use to communicate over a network. The OSI 7 layer model is still widely used because it can help isolate and troubleshoot networking problems.

Subnetting Calculation

There are a total of 9 faculties in UTeM and for every faculty, the number of students are within 500 - 1000. Based on the this situation, the private addressing scheme that are suggested for UTeM network is Network Number : 128.168.0.0/16 Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0 which have a block size of 65,536. In order to make the network more efficient and reduce congestion, the network will be divided into smaller networks to provide each faculty with their own network and network address. Concept of subnetting will be incorporated in which bits from the host portion of the IP address will be taken and reserved to define the subnet address.

TCP / IP Setting Manual

The operating system that we use to demonstrate this task is Windows 10. From previous subnetting calculations, the IP address for the Ulearn System Server is 128.168.24.5 and the subnet mask is 255.255.252.0. The default gateway of the router is assumed as 128.168.24.1. Next is the steps in configuring the IP address on the server.
